04006-M0860EAEE- Bound Magazine- THE AMERICAN MUSEUM, OR UNIVERSAL MAGAZINE- Containing Essays on Agriculture, Commerce, Manufacturing, Politics, Morals, and Manners. Sketches of National Characters, Natural And Civil History, And Biography. Law Information, Public Papers, Proceedings of Congress, Intelligence; Moral Tales, Ancient And Modern Poetry, &c, &c. Carey, Stewart and Co, Philadelphia. Vol. VII, Jan to Jun 1790. This date is not a typo. It really is over 200 years old- the oldest selection we’ve offered in sometime. We bought this in 1960 at an estate sale in Alexandria, VA. We sometimes jokingly remark that we will sell no selection before it’s time, but this one has been around a little longer than we usually “age’’ them!  Originally in The Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA and was released, presumably just before we bought it.  Book has some penciled library markings in end papers dated 1914. Full leather covers have been refurbished. Extremities worn, some gilt on spine is evident, but not readable. Hinges are cracked and have been resewn and reinforced. Pages are rag stock and quite good. Some discoloration to end papers and foxing throughout. One article is illustrated. Several essays and letters by Benjamin Franklin. Dr. Franklin died April 17, 1790. The account is here of Franklin’s last illness by his attending physician. Much more! Rare. Appendix, index.-  5 1/2” x 8 1/4” x 520pp.- $374.00

03458-M0295CHKS- Journals- THE PLOUGH BOY- By Henry Homespun, Jr., Albany, NY. Henry Homespun, Jr. was the pseudonym of Solomon Southwick, born 12/25/1773 in Newport, RI.  His father was an early champion for the rights of the colonists leading to the revolutionary war. He edited the National Democrat in 1817, the National Observer in 1826, and the Family Newspaper in 1838. He was twice nominated for Governor, but his party was in the minority at that time. He was a voluminous writer and left several published volumes. He died suddenly Nov. 18, 1839 at age 66. We offer here three issues of the Plough Boy: Vol. I, No. 4, Jun 2, 1819; Vol. I, No. 5, Jul 3, 1819; Vol. I, No. 6, Jul 10, 1819. Moralizing articles, farm news briefs, general news: ("Considerable sensation was excited in this city on Sunday last, by a report, which came up in the Steam Boat, of the death of President MONROE. We rejoice to find, that there is no corroboration of a rumour so melancholy. The President, however, is exposing his life, for the good of his constituents, in a tour amid the un-wholesome damps of the southern low-lands; and has been everywhere received in a manner, alike honorable to himself and his country.") Letters, anecdotes, etc. Several ads (one is illustrated) and commercial notices. Engraved masthead (and plows in one issue). General foxing but well preserved rag stock. Quite rare. -Each is 9-1/2" x 11" x 8pp. -All three. $98.00

05936-M1097ECEO- Journal- THE DRAINAGE AND FARM JOURNAL. Published by J. J. W. Billingsley, Indianapolis, IN. Vol. VI, No.8, August 1884. Devoted To Farm Drainage, Progressive Agriculture, and the Manufacture of Drain Tile. Strange one! There is a possibility that this was an organ of the tile manufacturers. Most of first half is taken up with promotion of tile installation for drainage of farm lands. Second half has many fine, large engravings in ads for tile machines, brick machines, clay crushers, pug mills, ditchers, kilns, tile laying machines, steam engines, elevators, etc. When we were in about the 5th grade, our little two room school went on an end-of-school outing to a brick factory near Denton, Texas. They gave us a complete tour of the facilities from excavation of the clay to finished brick and tile coming out of the kilns. We remember the entire tour as though it happened yesterday. (It's been more than 50 years ago.) Fascinating process! This journal has a light stain on lower cover and fist few pages, top edge has rodent chews about an inch on cover and first few pages. Back cover has a 2" triangular gap. Contents generally bright and clean. Rare. 6-1/8"x 9-1/4"x 64pp. $123.00

06108-M0495EEUA- Letter- INDIANA FARM BUREAU COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION, INC., 47 South Pennsylvania St, Indianapolis, IN. Nov 4, 1941.  Response to a request for "cooperative materials" from "Conference of Southern Mountain Workers." Says they did not have any other materials other than what they had obtained from the Cooperative League of the U.S.A. The era of the New Deal gave rise to many social experiments, some of which involved directing the affairs of others by a self-appointed cadre. The Co-ops were generally well received and have done a lot of good for people through the years, but the so-called "Conference of Southern Mountain Workers" was an arrogant effort by an educated elite to meddle in other's affairs. Anyway--this letter has 3-color   accents of a farmstead and blue heading. Rare reminder of a very historically significant time when we were trying to mesh our individualism with the realities of living together in an ever-expanding population. Includes envelope, torn open on the end, w/3 cent Washington stamp. Small tear at fold repaired on back, otherwise excellent condition. $28.00

These books first came to our attention more than thirty years ago. At that time reprinted versions of 500 Things… and 600 Things… had been produced and were virtual handbooks for the back-to-the-land-movement. This selection is an original second volume and contains measured plans and drawings of just about anything one could need on the farm. Chapters include: Equipment for the Home-Farm Shop, Metal Work, Woodworking and Farm Carpentry (includes plans for equipment for construction, miscellaneous equipment, for crops, poultry, swine, dairy cattle, beef cattle and sheep). Farm Concrete, Farm Plumbing, Electricity for the Farm, Handy Farm Hints. Index, well illustrated. Judging from the reference to the first 380 THINGS…… this apparently is a first edition. Hardback cloth covered boards, well bound. Minimal wear to board corners. Some previous owner’s name inscribed on end papers. 6-1/2"x 9-1/4"x 471pp. $42.00

01172- Book- FARM TOOLS & IMPLEMENTS BEFORE 1850. Robert C. Bailey, 1973. The first half of the 19th century saw considerable manufacturing activity in the U. S. During the mid-1800s the agricultural, construction, and mining industries expanded as the population spread westward. By 1860 agricultural products still made up more than two-thirds of all U. S. exports.

All of the many illustrations in this book were reproduced from original steel engraved ads available before 1850. Dated advertising material prior to 1850 is very scarce but, when found, affords one of the best and most authentic sources of information on these relics of the past. All the articles depicted were "manufactured" articles available to farmers from commercial sources. None were "home-made", although many of these tools were of such simple design and construction as to enable many farmers to copy them for their own use, especially with a little help from the local blacksmith. Mr. Bailey sold thousands of copies of this important booklet prior to his death in 1990. We still have a few new copies left and offer them at the original published price. 5-1/2" x 8-1/4" x 72 pp. Paperback.  $3.95
