06405-M0299EECC- Book- LIFE AMONG THE INDIANS, Or Personal Reminiscences And Historical Incidents Illustrative Of Indian Life And Character by Rev. James Finley, "The Old Chief," Or Ra-Wah-Wah. Edited by Rev. D. W. Clark, D. D. Cincinnati, Curts & Jennings. New York, Eaton & Mains. Finley authored this work ca 1860. There is no date, nor are we aware of just when this printing came out, but we think in the 1880s. It is the "Advocate Library" edition and likely issued in a set, perhaps by subscription. Occasionally, we have seen this represented as a first edition but we doubt that is the case. A vivid, firsthand account of frontier life in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan (then known as the North-West) from the late 18th century up into the 1830s. It makes a valuable contribution to sorting out the Indian wars, alliances, treachery and barbarism of both whites and Indians. It is painful for us to contemplate that our nation sprang from such bloody beginnings. Accounts of the brutalities are disturbing. Definitely not a bedtime book for youngsters. Cloth boards. Front board slightly warped, few flecks to spine, very light corner wear, pages consistently age-toned, overall a presentable copy, however. Private library plate and inked name of original owner from Winona, Minn. 5"x 7-3/8"x 552pp. $60.00

04020-M1294LOKR- Journal- HARPER’S WEEKLY, A JOURNAL OF CIVILIZATION, Harper & Bros, NY. Vol.X, No.486, April 21, 1866. Fantastic item! Reconstruction, the push west and more. Beautiful wood-cut engravings, including The Abraham Lincoln School for Freedmen, New Orleans, Louisiana; Indians Attacking Butterfield’s Overland Dispatch Coach [According to the correspondent/artist, who was a passenger on this coach, they left Atchison and were about "250 miles west" when they encountered Indians. They were able to fortify themselves at Smoky Hill Station. Must have been out around what is now Hays, Kansas]; Exterior and interior of Smoky Hill Station; Street View In Santa Fe, New Mexico; Idol Worship in Madrid, Spain & Cochin, China; Chamber of Commerce in Chicago; huge engraving of Prof Louis Agassiz; great advertisements, much more. Many dealers are taking these old journals apart and selling individual pages. We just can’t bring ourselves to take apart a perfectly good item like that, although we could sell for much more. So, it’s all here complete and in excellent condition. Being on rag stock, it appears almost new. A piece of history almost unobtainable anywhere else! 11-1/4" x 16" x 16pp. $140.00

01712-M0593EEE- Journal- LADIES HOME COMPANION, Mast, Crowell and Kirkpatrick, Springfield, OH, July 15, 1895. The Custer Fight, The Other Side (Indian account); Practical Housekeeping; What to Wear and How to Make It; Care and Culture of Flowers, Fancy Work; Children’s Corner; Mother’s Chat. Plus an outrageously chauvinistic editorial about the "New Woman’s" invasion of the professions, the conclusion being that "....if the trend continues, there will not be a single man left in any of the professions at the end of a few decades." Of course, the piece was written by a man. Well illustrated. Covers tattered with extensive tape repairs. 11" x 15-1/2" x 16pp. $16.00
