Other Major Mail Order Catalogues (Except Sears)

In date order.

Aldens/Chicago Mail Order Co.

Aldens had a fascinating history. We relate some of it on our Web site. They were founded in 1899 as Chicago Mail Order Millinery.  Millinery was dropped from the name in 1906, and the name was finally changed to Aldens.  The name Aldens came about from a men’s suit line. “Henry Alden” was represented as the men’s fashion buyer and later, his wife “Jane Alden” the buyer or stylist for the women’s line. However, they were both phantoms, the products of advertising schemes. The Aldens became so popular that the name of the company was changed to Aldens. The Schandig family actually owned the company. A Schandig son called us several years ago on a trip through our area. He was looking for a particular Aldens catalogue from the late 1930’s-early 1940s with a picture of his father. Unfortunately, we did not have the catalogue. Mr. Schnadig, the son, retired to El Paso, Texas and passed away in 2003.

Aldens and the Schandig family acquired The Boston Store ca1946, Gamble-Skogmo merged with Aldens ca1964, catalogue became Gamble Aldens, and then name changed back to Aldens by late 1970s. Wickes Corporation of California acquired them in 1980. Wickes filed for bankruptcy in 1982 and Aldens was closed. And…..so ended another American institution.

SALE CATALOGUES

01093- Catalogue- CHICAGO MAIL ORDER, Chicago, IL, Flyer 'Y', Summer 1932. Sale Catalogue. The major mail-order houses made a practice of binding a few copies of each catalogue in hardcovers for executives and key people so that the piece would stand up to frequent use. The title of catalogue and person’s name was stamped in gold on black leatherette boards. This is just such an item. (Although this copy does not have them, in some cases, sales statistic forms facing each page were also bound in.) Well preserved, colorful contents of ladies' clothing. An important item for any collection! Excellent condition. 6-3/4" x 9-3/4" x 56pp. $125.00

07447-M0811EASL- Catalogue- ALDENS, Chicago, Ill. Value sale catalogue, 1979 to July 31, 1980. “91 YEARS [OF SERVING OVER 4 MILLION AMERICAN FAMILIES”. 12-digit printing calculator, clothing and shoes, camping, luggage, cameras, typewriters, watches, clocks, furniture, household textiles, china, vacuum cleaner, sewing machine, tools, radios, tape players, etc. 8-1/8”x 10-3/4”x 50pp. $18.00

CHRISTMAS CATALOGUES

Very nice and colorful Christmas catalogue similar to Sears. Gifts of all kinds for the entire family. Lots of toys, jewelry, watches, fashions, sporting goods, tools, household goods, wood-burning stoves, cameras, musical instruments, radios, and a hundred and one other items! This is the next to last Christmas catalogue Aldens published before they went out of business. Excellent condition. 8"x 11"x 402pp. $65.00

01888- Catalogue- ALDENS, Chicago, IL, Christmas 1982. Beautiful and colorful "milestone" catalogue about the size of a Sears Xmas catalogue. The cover is mortise-cut in five diamond shapes to reveal candid shots of family around Christmas tree enjoying their presents. Fashions, toys, games, wide range of gifts for entire family. Founded in 1899 as Chicago Mail Order Millinery ("millinery" dropped from name in 1906), this was Alden's last year in business. Wicks Lumber Co. had acquired them earlier, pulled all the liquid assets out and folded 'em up. Sad but true. Near mint. 8" x 10-3/4" x 586 pp. $65.00

Bellas Hess, National Cloak and Suit, National Bellas Hess, Charles Williams Stores Co.

National Cloak & Suit was founded about 1888. Around 1910 a reorganization brought about National Bellas Hess, into which Charles Williams stores were merged in late 1929. Bellas Hess survived until the late 1970s. Their name has been in the news within the last few years because of a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1968 the Court decided in the company's favor against the state of Illinois. This landmark case declared that Illinois could not cause Bellas Hess to collect taxes on sales in the state unless they had a "nexus" (physical presence) in the state. Until the last few years, this has been the guiding principal for mail order companies. The state bureaucrats are now so desperate for revenues that they brought another case to the court in 1992 in Quill vs. South Dakota. The Court again confirmed the major part of the Bellas Hess decision on the grounds that to require out-of-state firms to collect sales taxes interfered with interstate commerce. In essence, the Court handed the problem to the Congress. Something seems to be a little out of kilter in all this sales tax controversy. In our humble opinion, no state official should have the authority to go after a company, mail order or otherwise, on fishing expeditions, just because their state coffers are empty.

At one time National Bellas Hess was one of the top five mail-order companies in the country but slid into bankruptcy in the late 1970s. In the 1960s it did about $250-million a year with 25 million catalogues mailed annually. Former employees attribute their demise to the fact that the company more or less abandoned its mail-order mission in favor of discount retail stores and supermarkets. A look at these following catalogues shows that there was nothing cheap about their wares in 1909 to 1918. The quality stands out!

GENERAL MERCHANDISE CO, Milwaukee, WI was the predecessor of Penney's mail-order operation. "David Kritzik founded GMC in 1938. In 1961 they had sales of $37 million with the help of new computerization. The big stores of the time, including Sears and Wards, were still processing orders by hand.  GMC came to the attention of J. C. Penney Company planners and On Feb. 21, 1962, Penney purchased GMC for $11 million. In September of 1962, seven Midwestern J. C. Penney stores in Illinois and Wisconsin opened catalogue sales desks. By the end of the year, 21 desks were operating. In 1963, the two companies merged completely. In August, the first J. C. Penney Fall/Winter catalogue was distributed.  This catalogue had 1,252 pages, one-third of which were in color.  The first specialty catalogue was also printed, featuring toys. This was the precursor to the Holiday Book."1

We can probably safely venture that GMC's lines had changed somewhat from 1938 to the time of Penney's acquisition. At least, GMC had developed a discount division, which was to become Penney's model for the ill-fated Treasury discount centers. We occasionally have these GMC catalogues but they are becoming rather scarce now.

1Our sincere thanks to JCPenney Archives folks for this historical information.

RARE HARDCOVER J.C. PENNEY CATALOGUES

The major mail-order houses have traditionally case bound a portion of their catalogue production for office and counter use. In some instances they also sent especially good customers a hardback copy. These offered are deaccessioned from the JCPENNEY archives. Although of relatively recent dates, all are destined to increase in value at an accelerated rate and they make a nice addition to any library. The bindings are black cloth-covered boards and have key edition information stamped in silver on spine. All except the specialty catalogues have the color cover tipped on front and back.

FANTASTIC SELECTIONS FROM MONTGOMERY WARD CO.

The Montgomery Ward Company celebrated its Fiftieth Anniversary in 1922.  Their Spring/Summer Catalogue No.96 issued that year relates the most interesting history of the Ward organization up to that point and describes the first multi-page catalogue published:

“To the best of our knowledge, there is in existence today but one copy of the first Montgomery Ward & Co. catalogue issued in book form. We have photographed and reproduced it above as near as possible. The original was printed in 1874 on a small foot-power press.

“Previous to this catalogue our merchandise was sold from a single sheet price lists. By arranging these lists in book form, this, the original Mail Order Catalogue, was produced.”

The picture reproduced is the No. 11 catalogue cover. 1875 saw the arrival of catalogue No. 13.  We have a few copies of the reprinted No. 13, offered originally as a premium in 1972 on the occasion of Ward’s 100th Anniversary.

04224-M0995ERCR- Catalogue Reprint- MONTGOMERY WARD & CO., Chicago, IL. Six items: 1) Cat No.13, S/S 1875. This is the little blue back reprint. Reprinted in 1972 as a part of the company's Centennial observance. Excellent condition. 3-1/4” x 5” x 72pp. Excellent condition 2) First Day Cover with 3-color illustration of Aaron Montgomery Ward and colorful 8¢ stamp- “100th Anniversary of Mail Order.” Chicago cancellation. 3) Photocopy of the original sheet sent by Montgomery Ward with 165 items listed. 4) 5 page copy of history from Ward’s S/S 1922 catalogue on the occasion of their Fiftieth Anniversary. 5) 4 page copy of promotion from Ward’s 100th Anniversary catalogue of F/W 1972 offering the reprinted little No. 13 catalogue from 1875 and the first day cover. 6) 3 page photocopied article from 2001 from online newspaper, Burton on the Bay, entitled “Farewell, Montgomery Ward. Without Its Catalog, Its Never Been The Same”. All six pieces. $54.00

In the Ward’s promotions through the years, Aaron Montgomery Ward is called the “Founder of the Mail Order Business, but perhaps we need to say more on the subject and these selections.  In the first place, although Aaron Montgomery Ward is certainly worthy of our respect, he did not originate selling by neither mail nor the catalogue business.  In 1744 Ol’ Ben Franklin himself printed a brochure, which is really a catalogue, of his newly invented cast iron fireplace stove. Many English manufacturers were issuing catalogues in the 1750s. A watchmaker near Ephrata, PA was issuing a catalogue by 1765.

Secondly, although this little No.13 catalogue of 1875 is called Ward’s first, he actually started sending lists of his merchandise in 1872 with a flier measuring 10” x 20” with headline: “Grangers Supplied By The Cheapest Cash House In America.”  We’ve reduced a reprint of this one to 7” x 15” to copy on our machine. We’ll include a photocopy with your order for these items.  The promotion offering the reprint and the first day cover appeared in the F/W 1972 catalogue along with a printed letter of congratulation from Richard Nixon, president of the U.S. at the time. Most of these 1972 catalogues have the coupon page removed because literally thousands of the promotions were ordered. Both the reprinted catalogue and the “Official Commemorative 1st Day Cover” were available for a $1.00.  All the profits from these responses were donated to Boy and Girl Scouts, National 4-H Clubs, and Distributive Education Clubs of America.

Thirdly, copies of this No.13 catalogue reprint are floating around here and there and are being represented as originals at prices up to $300.00. It’s not labeled as a reprint, but you can tell in several different ways. Look at condition. A catalogue nearly 130 years old will not look fresh off the press. Look at the foxing. These little brown smudges, which appear on old paper, are actually molds or rust from paper impurities. On these catalogue reprints the foxing is photographed in the negative, not growing on the surface of the paper itself.
