                                                          MOSES HARMAN, FREETHINKER MATERIALS

Moses Harman, publisher of LUCIFER THE LIGHT BEARER, was a former teacher and minister turned abolitionist and freethinker.  He was a liberal, a proponent of individualist anarchism, free love, and a sex radical for the emancipation of women from their status as "breeding machines" for the pleasure of men. His paper was the only journal of sexual liberty published from the early 1880s to 1907.  His outspoken activities eventually landed him in prison after printing material that contained anatomically correct language. The name of his newspaper, LUCIFER THE LIGHT BEARER was probably calculated to draw attention, and it certainly did that. He wrote: "…while we do not adopt the reputed character of any man, god, demigod or demon, as our model, yet there is one phrase of the character of their Lucifer that is also appropriate to our paper, viz.: that of an educator. The god of the Bible had doomed mankind to perpetual ignorance-- they would never have known Good from Evil if Lucifer had not told them how to become wise as the gods themselves. Hence, according to theology, Lucifer was the first teacher of science."

We bought these newspapers from a private library several years ago and haven't been able to find any additional copies since.  We previously sold copies from time to time to the American Atheists in Austin, Texas founded by Madalyn Murray O'Hair, her son Jon Garth Murray, and her granddaughter Robin Murray O'Hair. Robin called us to order these occasionally. We didn't hear from her for a while and were curious about the lapse of time. We then were horrified to learn that they were abducted, murdered, and dismembered by three trusted employees in 1995. $600,000 was stolen and the perpetrators were finally caught in 2001.

We haven't offered any copies since and the fourteen below are the last we have. Copies are quite rare. These are all very fragile and must be handled with care.  They are shrink-wrapped full size on backing board and shipped that way. Package will be approximately 17” x 25”.

04751-M0395EEHC- Booklet- CITIZENSHIP THROUGH CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Vol.4, No.36. Feb 1929. Published by the School Committee, Boston, Mass. City of Boston Printing Dept. Organized For The Furtherance Of The Cause Of Better Citizenship As A Supplement To School Document Ten, 1924. Seventy-five "Character Lacks" are listed as a characteristic of someone who is not obedient. In the 1920s, responsible adults recognized that character development was a good and noble pursuit for all. They recognized that good character was not something a child was born with, but had to develop to be an upstanding citizen. In other words, that a conscience was a learned and developed characteristic of human beings. One of the primary reasons our society and schools are in the trouble they are in today is because many parents blanch at the idea that their children might need character development. Many today evidently believe that their children, by virtue of the fact that they are their children, are somehow born with developed characters! How foolish! Light stain, light edge chips. 7" x 10" x 40pp. $45.00
